Churros & Chocolate

La visita a la churrería EL Moro, fue basada en mi puro instinto primitivo. La verdad encontré a El Moro a través de instagram, y todas sus fotografías me parecían tan deliciosas y me provocaban ir a probar esas delicias.

Me costo poder visitar El Moro, por que SIEMPRE esta lleno. Afortunadamente tienen varias ubicaciones así que tenía la certeza que tarde o temprano lo iba a lograr.

Finalmente llego el día de poder comer mi delicioso churro, pero como ya saben que siempre quiero de todo, en este lugar ademas de los churros regulares, tienen los consuelos, con son unos sandwiches de churro con helado al medio.

Decidimos entonces pedir una orden de churros, un chocolate caliente y un consuelo con helado de vainilla para compartir.

La verdad todo esto fue simplemente mi antojo, por que a Gavin no le gusta comer cosas dulces, pero, es demasiado bueno y decidió comer conmigo para que yo también pudiera probar ambas cosas.

Los churros eran crujientes por fuera, pero por dentro les hacia falta esponjosidad. Creo que es un lugar rico, pero la verdad yo no pondría tantas expectativas los churros en sí.

Es una parada oficial por supuesto por lo emblemático del lugar, pero no caigan en mi error pensando en que van a comer los mejores churros de su vida, por que eso simple y sencillamente no va a suceder.

The visit to Churrería El Moro, was based on my basic instinct. The truth is that I found El Moro on instagram, and I found that all their pictures were delicious and made me wanna go eat them.

  It was a little complicated to try this famous churros because the place was always packed. Fortunately they have many locations so I was sure that sooner or later I was going to try them.

Finally the day of eating a delicious churro came, but as you know, I always want it all, and in this place besides the churros they have the “consuelos” that are ice cream sandwiches with churro.

We decided to ordered some churros, a hot chocolate and one consuelo with vanilla ice cream to share.

The truth is that all this was just my craving, because Gavin doesn’t like too much the dessert, but he is the sweetest and decided to help me out so I could try everything.

The churros were crispy on the outside but in the inside they lack smoothness. I think the place is good, but I wouldn’t have high expectations in the churros.

EL Moro is an official stop, because is an icon, but don’t make the same mistake that I did, thinking that those are gonna be the best churros of your life because it won’t happen.

One day Foodie Trip to Pana

Era el sábado de semana santa y durante todo el descanso, me había enfocado en adelantar pendientes y descansar en mi casa. Así que llegando casi al final de toda una semana, no quería pasar un día más en mi casa.

El plan lo armamos con un par de amigos, la idea era ir y regresar a Panajachel en un solo día e ir a comer rico. La verdad Pana, no esta tan lejos de la ciudad, pero lo complicado muchas veces es el tráfico. Así que la hora de reunión era a las 6.30 am en la casa de un amigo, en dónde todos dejábamos los carros y nos íbamos juntos.

Un día antes de nuestro Foodie Tour, me di a la tarea de buscar diferentes opciones para proponerles para ir a comer, por que la idea era que todos estuvieran satisfechos con la elección y lo hiciéramos democráticamente.

Dentro de las opciones de almuerzo tenia, hamburguesa, comida mediterránea y shushi, y con honestidad, pensé que iban a elegir hamburguesas. Pero para mi sorpresa, este grupo de amigos es lo máximo, el tipo de gente para ir a experimentar, por su la elección fue comida mediterránea, que era la opción que secretamente yo quería desde el principio.

Como era muy temprano nadie habia desayunado, así que por unanimidad, decidimos pasar desayunando a Técpan a la Cabaña Suiza, ya les comente de este lugar y sus espectacules tortillas con queso, las que casi siempre como cuando paso, pero a la opción informal del restaurante, por que al restaurante en si nunca había entrado.

Como las tortillas son tan deliciosas, las expectativas eran altas para el desayuno. Revisando el menu pedí un desayuno que incluía avena, dos tortillas con queso (que no podían faltar), frijoles volteados, huevos revueltos con chorizo y platanos fritos.

El servicio fue bastante lento, considerando que no estaba tan lleno como cuando llegamos. Pero estabamos de vacacaiones así que fuimos benevolentes.

Cuando llego el desayuno, la avena estaba normal, nada spectacular, como que te la hubieran hecho en tu casa, pero sin el sentido familiar, y no tenía ningún toque especial, para mi aunque sea un poco de canela le hubiera puesto. Luego vinieron los huevos, que estaban salados y el chorizo reseco y además las toritllas llegaron frías, este día habia decidido no hacer dieta, y cuando me tope con este desayuno fue una desepción haber sedido a la gordura por algo que no valia la pena. Lo que rescato el desayuno fueron sus tortillas con queso que nunca desepcionan. Pero en general no regresaria a desayunar, prefiero seguir comiendo las tortillas con queso que siempre como, que son deliciosas, el servicio es rápido y un buen precio.

Al final nisiquiera el café estuvo bueno, primero nos llevaron todos los desayunos y se tardaron miles para llevarnos las bebidas.

Para continuar el tour la siguiente parade fue una refrescante bebida espirituosa, por que como era descanso solo para entrar a Pana nos hicimos una hora, ya todos estabamos cansados de ir en el carro.

En la calle Santander, se pone una carreta llamada “La Clinica” que ofrece deliciosas bebidas con tu licor favorito. Yo pedí un “Palomazo” que tenia de ingredients, fresa, mora, arandanos, tequila, vodka y licor de coco.

El resultado fue una bebida dulce y refrescante a la vez y al momento sientes entrar la felicidad al cuerpo :)

Para continuar Rosario una de las integrantes de la Aventura tenia antojo de unos churros, así que paramos para complacerle su antojo. Le pedí un churro para probarlo, y estaba Buenos, el exterior estaba crispy y el interior suavecito. Las caracteristicas correctas de un buen churro.

El amuerzo estaba destinado para Abassi, un restaurante de comida mediterranea. Tengo una debilidad por dos cosas: el hummus y el falafel. Así que cuando vi el menu no lo dude, debia ordenar el pita falafel.

He comido falafel en otros lugares, y uno de los grandes problemas es que, los sobrecocinan y dejan incluso hasta un poco quemado el exterior. Así que cruce los dedos para que esta vez no me sucediera eso.

Mientras esperabamos nuestra comida, el lugar tiene una mesa baja con miles de cojines en donde la espera no se hizo tan larga, por que la espera si fue un poco larga.

En el post van a encontrar diferentes opciones platos pero les voy hablar de las dos que realmente me comí, el resto fue lo que pidieron mis amigos, pero no podría darles un buen review por que no me lo comi.

Con Irene decidimos pedir un pita falafel y un pita de pollo, para poder probar ambos y compartir la mitad cada una.

Yo decidí empezar por el de falafel, y la verdad es que ya no quería darle mi otra mitad a Irene. Las bolitas de falafel estaban cocinadas a la perfección, estaban doraditas por fuera y bien cocidas. Tenia el pan pita suficiente hummus, otra cosa que me desagrada de algunos lugares, es que apenas y le ponene hummus, pero aquí fueron generosos y además nos llevaron unaderezo de yogurt.

El otro plato era el shawarma chicken pita, que estaba compuesto de pollo a la parrilla, con hummus, tomate, cebolla y zucchini al grill, perejil y cebolla.

Los vegetales asados le daban un toque particular al sandwich y el pollo tenia muchisimo sabor por si solo. La verdad me gusto, pero mi favorite fue el de falafel, tal vez hay días en los que no tienes ganas de comer carne y tienes la dicha de encontrar comida que te satisfice tanto que cuando pruebas carne deja de antojarse.

Como eramos los unicos en el restaurant al finalizar de almorzar todos decidieron hacer una pequeña siesta entre todas las almohadas, y fue perfecto.

El unico detalle que deben considerer en Abassi, es que como en la mayoria de lugares en Pana, no aceptan tarjeta, algo que me desagrada, pero bueno, no podia ser perfecto. Así que lleven efectivo.

Para continuar y como digestivo, pasamos a café loco. El coffee shop por excelencia de Pana, situado sobre la Santander. Ellos compran diferentes blends todas las semanas así que siempre es un misterio con que te vas a encontrar. Además la técnia para preparer el café es tan buena que lo percibes en cada sorbo.

Yo pedí por supusto un cappuccino con leche descremada. Y me lo hicieron extra fuerte. Disfrute de cada uno de esos sorbos de sabor dulce, amargo y un cuerpo fuerte.

Avanzando la tarde nos hacia falta el postre, así que fuimos por un helado. Siempre en la calle Santander, encuentran Choco ghurt, una venta de helados a base de yogurt, a los cuales les pueden poner chocolate extra de diferentes clases.

Les prometo que para esta hora del día mi estomago no podia más, pero fui valiente y pedí un chocobanano. Lo pedí con maní, pero no pude con él y deje la mitad.

Decidimos regresar a las 5pm, el viaje de regreso estuvo cansado por el tráfico, así que decidimos pasar por un chocolate. Yo lo sé COMO DEMASIADO. El lugar elegido fue la Cabaña de don Robert, yo pedí un chocolate con agua, aunque prefiero toda la vida con leche, pero como estaba tan llena sentía que no iba a lograrlo si tomaba chocolate con leche. Pero la cosa no se quedo en el chocolate, tenia que acompañarlo con una herradura y la combinación es riquisima, como un buen matrimonio.

En un solo día comimos y bebimos de 7 lugares diferentes, les prometeo que regrese super llena, pero por supuesto eses sentimiento se esfumo a las 7 horas máximo.

Estas son unas buenas idesa para comer por si quieren hacer un viajecito gastronomico y disfrutar de la linda vista del lago que ofrece Pana.

It was Saturday before the Eastern Sunday, and during the entire week I had been doing chores and resting at my home. So towards the end of the week I didn’t want to spend another day doing the same.

We make a plan with some friends, the idea was going for a one day foodie trip to Panajachel. The truth is, Pana is not so far away from the city, but the complicated part is the traffic. So we decided to meet at 6.30 am at a friend´s house where we were going to leave the cars, and carpool.

One day before our foodie tour, I did my homework and researched for different options to eat, because the idea was that we were all satisfied with the election and have everyone agree.

Between the options for lunch I had, burger, Mediterranean food and sushi, and honestly I thought that they were going to pick burgers. But for my surprise, this group of friends is the real deal, the kind of people who are adventurous, and their pick was Mediterranean food, that was that option that secretly I wanted from the beginning.

Because it was so early neither of us, had eaten breakfast, so together decided to have breakfast in Tecpan in La Cabaña Suiza, I have already talked to you about this place and their spectacular cheese tortillas, that all the times that I go to La Cabaña Suiza y pass to the casual part of the restaurant to eat one of them, but I hadn´t been in the restaurant.

Like I had eaten these delicious tortillas my expectations for the breakfast were high. Checking the menu I ordered a breakfast that included, oatmeal, two cheese tortillas (that couldn’t be out), fried black beans, two scramble eggs with chorizo and fried banana.

The service of the restaurant was really slow, considering that when we arrived it wasn´t any busier than when we left. But like we were on vacations we decided to be patient.

When the breakfast arrived, nothing spectacular, like if you were eating oatmeal at your house, but without the familiar sense, and didn’t have anything special, at least they could put some cinnamon. Then the eggs arrived but they were salty and the chorizo meat dried, and the tortillas were cold. This day I had decided on not following my diet, and when this breakfast arrived I felt a big disappointment and frustration about giving up the diet for such a bad meal. The only thing that could be rescue was the cheese tortillas.

I wouldn’t return to have breakfast at the restaurant, I prefer to keep eating only their delicious tortillas on the casual side of the restaurant, which is a quick service and value for money.

At the end not even the coffee was good, first they served all the breakfast and at the middle of the breakfast the served us the coffee.

To continue the foodie tour, the next stop was a refreshing beverage, and because of the day off, entering to Pana was chaos, we spent and hour just to enter, and we all were tired of the trip.

On the Santander Street there is a little cart named “La Clinica” that sell delicious cocktails. I ordered “Palomazo” that is a mix of strawberries, blueberry and cranberry and tequila, vodka and coconut liquor.

The result was a cocktail fresh and sweet at the same time and when it starts to flood in your body you start to feel the happiness inside of you.

The next stop was some churros, because Rosario was craving one. We stop to buy churros and I asked her one, and were crispy in the outside and fluffy on the inside. A good churro characteristic.

The lunch destination was Abassi, a restaurant of Mediterranean food. I had a soft spot for the hummus and falafel. So when I saw the option of pita falafel I didn’t doubt it, I had to order one.

I had eaten falafel in other restaurants and one of the biggest problems is that they overcooked the falafel and leaves a burn part on the outside. So I crossed my fingers that this time it wouldn’t happen.

While we wait for our meal, the restaurant has a short table with lots of cushions, where the waiting felt a little better, because we really had to wait.

You will see a lots of food photos but I´m going to talk to you only about the ones I actually eat, the rest are just the sample of what my friends eat.

Whit Irene we decided to order a pita falafel and a chicken pita, to tasted both of them and share the half of each one.

I decided to start with the pita falafel, to tell you the truth I didn´t want to give Irene the other half because it was delicious. The falafel was cooked perfectly, with the crispy outside and well cooked in the inside. The pita bread had enough hummus, another detail that disgusts me in other restaurant, because they put so little hummus. They were generous and gave us a yogurt dressing that was creamy and fresh.

The other pita bread was a Shawarma Chicken Pita, that had herb infused marinated grilled chicken breast with hummus, grilled tomato, onion, zucchini, parsley and baby lettuce.

The grilled vegetable give the pita bread a unique flavor and the chicken was full of flavor thanks of the infusion. I also like this but my favorite was the falafel pita bread, maybe because that day I wasn´t in the mood of eat meat, y when you found such a delicious meal with it, it´s glorious and you don’t need more.

Because we were the only customers in the restaurant the group decided to take a nap on the pillows and was the energy charger that we need it.

The only detail about Abassi it´s that they only accept cash, that is really common in the restaurant area on Panajachel, that’s not my favorite thing, but you cannot had it all.

To continue and as a digestive we went for a coffee at Cafe Loco. This small coffee shop it´s located at the Santander Street. They buy different coffee blends each week, so you don’t know what surprise are going to find. Plus the technique to make the coffee is perfect, that you can feel it in every sip of coffee.

I ordered of course a cappuccino with skim milk, and they make it with a double shot. I enjoy every part of it, it was sweet, bitter and with a strong body.

The one thing left was the dessert, and the group wanted to eat an ice cream. We stopped at Choco ghurt, an ice cream shop that makes their ice creams with yogurt, and you can choose to put a different kind of toppings to your ice cream.

I was so full for that whole hour of the day, that I couldn’t eat one more thing, but I made an effort and eat a choco babano, that is a banana covered with chocolate, mine was milk chocolate and peanut as topping. It was really good and the price was cheap $00.50 but I didn´t finished it, I left the half.

We decided to went back to the city at 5pm, but the return was exhausting because of the traffic, so we went for a hot chocolate. The last place for this activity was La Cabaña de Don Robert in Tecpan. Like I HAD EATEN TO MUCH, ordered a hot chocolate with water, but my favorite it´s with milk, and as complement ate an herradura that is a typical cookie of the area, and this two are like a perfect marriage, if you drink hot chocolate you need an herradura.

In one day we ate and drink in seven different places, I promise you that when I came back I was really full, but of course this feeling went away after 7 hour top.

These are good ideas to eat if you are wanting to make a foodie trip and enjoy the view that only the lake of Panajachel can offer you.

España in the NW

I had a craving for a real churro and I started my search on the internet and found 180 XURROS, a little churro shop in Portland, that is heavenly. You don't have to search anything else.

I ordered a filled xurro with dulce de leche that was PERFECT, the bad news is that I went to this place, one day before my return to Guatemala, so I couldn't went for more churros, but on my next visit am sure that I will spend much more time eating this heavenly churros.

Tenia un antojo terrible por churros de verdad, así que empece mi búsqueda en internet y encontré 180 Xurros, una pequeña tienda de churros en Portland, que realmente es celestial. Después que los encuentras no necesitas nada más en tu vida.

Yo ordene un churro relleno con dulce de leche que estaba perfecto. La mala noticia es que fui al lugar un día antes de mi regreso a Guatemala, así que no pude regresar a comer más churros, pero estoy seguro que en mi próxima visita, voy a pasar mucho más tiempo comiendo churros.
